Assembling, adjusting and preparing your BMX for first use
How do I use my BMX for the first time?
Just got your BMX? Great! Before you hit the skate park or practice manuals on the street, it's wise to give your bike a quick check. In a few simple steps, you can make sure everything is securely fastened, properly adjusted, and you're safe to ride.
Step 1: Check your setup
- Is everything secure? Check your handlebars, headset, cranks, and wheel bolts.
- Does the steering wheel turn smoothly? It shouldn't creak or stick—so give it a quick turn and listen.
- Do your pedals move smoothly and without play? Check that your cranks are stable and don't wobble.
- Are your tires hard enough? Inflate them to the recommended pressure, usually between 4 and 6 bar for BMX bikes.
Step 2: Adjust if necessary
Every rider rides differently. You might want to tilt your handlebars forward a bit, or use slightly softer tires for more grip on the asphalt. Check with your multi-tool:
- Is your steering wheel straight and firmly clamped in the voice?
- Are your pedals properly tightened, without any clicking?
- Want to set your saddle higher or lower for comfort or tricks?
Step 3: Start practicing
Find a flat stretch of asphalt or a quiet parking lot. Start with:
- Stepping on and rolling
- Making turns and keeping balance
- Braking with control (if you have brakes!)
Tip: Protection is smart, especially when practicing tricks. Helmet on, knee pads on—ready to ride.
Common beginner mistakes
- Riding with loose bolts – tighten everything before you go
- Over-inflating or driving with flat tires
- No idea what your 'foot forward' is (useful to know though!)
Ready to cycle?
Every BMX rider started somewhere – even the pros. With a well-tuned bike, some courage, and a bit of perseverance, you'll soon be riding just as smoothly. Time to get pedaling!
