Buy a Wheelie bike or MTB Dirt bike? These are the differences

Are you torn between a wheelie bike and an MTB dirt bike ? Both bikes are ideal for active riders, but they are designed for completely different styles. In this guide, you will discover which bike is best for you, based on riding style, terrain and body size.

What is a wheelie bike – and what is it for?

A wheelie bike is made for maximum control during wheelies and street tricks. Thanks to the short chainstay, wide tires and powerful rear brake, you can keep your balance better. These bikes are popular with bikelife riders and young people who value control and style.

What is an MTB dirt bike – and what do you use it for?

MTB dirt bikes are designed for jumps, turns and technical tracks. They have a lighter frame, front suspension and sturdy parts for rough landings. Ideal for pump tracks, bike parks, dirt and skate parks where airtime and impact are key.

Sizing advice: which wheel size suits you?

The right wheel size depends on your body height. Below you can see which size fits which height for wheelie bikes :

Body lengthWheel sizeAdvice
90–110 cm20"For young children
110–130 cm22"Preschool and primary school age
130–150 cm24"Children from 8 years
150–180 cm26"Teenagers and young adults
180+ cm29"Adults and tall riders

For MTB dirt bikes, slightly different sizes apply. See below which size suits you:

130–150 cm24"Youth model for pump tracks
150+ cm26"Standard dirt bike for teenagers & adults

What should you pay attention to when choosing your bicycle?

  • Riding style: Are you going for balance and wheelies? Then choose a wheelie bike. Do you want airtime and jumps? Then a dirt bike is the better option.
  • Brake system: Wheelie bikes often have a strong rear brake. Dirt bikes are equipped with disc brakes for control during landings.
  • Frame & suspension: A dirt bike usually has front suspension. Wheelie bikes have a stiff frame for maximum control on the street.
  • Sizing: Choose a wheel size that fits your height and style. Not sure? Go for an in-between size with an adjustable saddle.

Common mistake: wrong bike, wrong surface

We often see a dirt bike being used for wheelies , or a wheelie bike on a pump track . Technically it can be done – but it is not ideal. The geometry, components and suspension are geared towards completely different disciplines.

A dirt bike is built for impact and jumps. It is heavier and has suspension, which makes long-term wheelie riding more difficult. A wheelie bike is light and stiff, perfect for balance but less suitable for rough landings.

Our tip: Choose a bike that suits your main goal. For tricks and control on the street, a wheelie bike is ideal. For jumps, speed and technical courses, an MTB dirt bike is better suited.
