Assembling, adjusting and preparing your skateboard for first use
How do I use my skateboard for the first time?
Yes! You've got your skateboard – good job! Time to get rolling... but first, let's make sure everything is set up securely and safely. In a few simple steps, you'll lay a solid foundation for all your rides and tricks.
Step 1: Check your setup
- Are all components properly secured? Check your trucks, kingpin, and wheel bolts.
- Are your wheels rolling smoothly? Test with your hand to make sure they spin freely and don't make any noise.
- Is the grip tape clean and rough? A good grip gives you more control.
- Are the bolt heads flush with the surface of your deck? They shouldn't protrude or be recessed.
Step 2: Adjust if necessary
Everyone drives differently. You might want your trucks a little looser for corners, or tighter for stability. Grab a T-tool or wrench and check:
- Are your trucks too tight or too loose? Adjust them to your liking.
- Do your wheels have any play? Tighten them by hand and then loosen them a quarter turn, allowing the wheel to roll perfectly freely.
Step 3: Start practicing
Find a flat, dry surface (such as a bike path or a small square). Start with:
- Getting on and off
- Pushing and balancing
- Braking with your back foot (foot drag)
Tip: Wear a helmet and safety gear. It's smart, not silly—especially in the beginning.
Common beginner mistakes
- Wanting to drive too fast on slopes
- Skating on gravel or wet tiles – slippery and dangerous
- Choosing the wrong stance (regular vs. goofy)
Ready to roll!
Give yourself some time. No one skates perfectly on day one. But with a good start, some practice, and a little courage, you'll be on your way in no time. Let's roll!
