How to Learn Tricks: Tips and Exercises for Every Level

Ready to do tricks on your unicycle?

Can you ride a bike straight ahead without falling over? Then it's time for the fun part: tricks! And no, no stunts on stairs – we'll start simple. Think corners, idling (keeping still while balancing), and learning to mount without help.

On this page, we'll show you how to gradually gain more control. With a little practice, your unicycle will soon feel like an extension of yourself.

1. Mounting with support

Your first meters start with being able to step up properly. Roos Seegers – yes, world champion – shows you how to do that with a wall or fence in this video:

2. What can you practice afterward?

  • Mounting without support: Place your dominant foot on the pedal, hop up, and immediately balance. Start on grass, which is more forgiving.
  • Turning: Look where you want to go, lean slightly and keep your speed steady.
  • Idling (keeping still while balancing): One foot down, wheel back and forth. Ideal for your balance.
  • Cycling backward: Start from idling and do a few backward pedal strokes. Back straight, eyes behind you.
  • Jumping on the spot: Grip the saddle firmly and make small hops. Start slowly and build up.

4. Smart practice really works

  • Practicing 10–15 minutes a day is enough to improve quickly.
  • Find a flat spot free of obstacles.
  • Frustration? It's part of it. Just keep trying.
  • Every new skill = a win. Celebrate it!
