Which skateboard is right for you?

Whether you want to learn skateboarding, cruise around or progress to more advanced tricks, choosing the right skateboard depends on your shoe size, experience and riding style. At Streetsurfshop, you'll find complete skateboards for kids, beginners and experienced skaters. Our skateboard buying guide helps you find a suitable setup.

What skateboard deck width do you need?

Skateboard deck width is measured in inches. Narrower decks can be easier to turn and flip, while wider decks provide more room for your feet and may feel more stable. Your shoe size is a useful starting point. For beginners who mainly want to learn to ride, we recommend a broader range of deck widths. When learning more technical tricks, the right width becomes more important.

Skateboards for beginners and tricks

When you first start skateboarding, the main skills are balancing, pushing, turning and stepping off safely. A complete skateboard that rolls smoothly and turns predictably is a good starting point. If you want to learn ollies, kickflips and other tricks, pay closer attention to deck construction, truck quality, wheels and bearings. A skateboard designed mainly for casual riding is not always ideal for intensive trick riding.

What is a complete skateboard?

A complete skateboard includes the deck and griptape, trucks, wheels and bearings. The components are already assembled and selected to work together, so you can start skating without having to choose each part separately. Complete skateboards are a convenient option for beginners and riders who prefer a ready-to-ride setup.

What else should you consider?

Besides deck width, wheel hardness, truck quality and deck construction affect how a skateboard performs. Softer wheels generally provide a more comfortable ride on rough pavement. Harder wheels are often preferred for tricks on smooth surfaces. The best skateboard therefore depends on both your shoe size and where you plan to skate.
