Assemble your BMX

Yes, your new BMX has arrived! Before you hit the skate park or practice manuals, it's wise to properly assemble and check your bike. This way, you'll be sure everything is securely fastened, runs smoothly, and you can start safely.

Step 1: Build up

Supplies:

  • Allen key
  • Open-end wrench
  • Pliers
  • Small Phillips screwdriver

Useful to know:

  • Tighten the bolts clockwise and loosen them counterclockwise .
  • Exception: pedals
    • Right pedal → turn clockwise
    • Left pedal → turn counterclockwise

Building a BMX – step by step

  1. Open the box
  2. The box contains the left and right pedals and the saddle . You'll also need pliers , a wrench , and Allen keys .
  3. Carefully cut off all tie-wraps and tape with pliers (be careful not to scratch the paint).
  4. Remove the top cap from the stem using an allen wrench.
  5. Install the handlebars. Place the handlebars in the stem, replace the top cap, and tighten the bolts by hand, then use an Allen wrench.
  6. Straighten your handlebars and tighten your stem. Tighten the four bolts crosswise with an Allen key to distribute the pressure evenly.
Common mistake: pulling the front too tight, which creates a large gap at the back and clamps the stem crooked.
  7. Goal: The front and back should have equal space between the top cap and stem. As shown in the video, this is the correct way.
  8. Finally tighten the 4 bolts of the stem in a crosswise pattern.
  9. Install the saddle and tighten it securely with an Allen key.
  10. Place the saddle into the frame and tighten the bolt with an Allen key.
  11. Install the pedals onto the crankarms. Always tighten the first two turns by hand, then use a wrench. This will allow you to feel if the threads are properly engaged.
    - Right pedal = clockwise tighten.
    - Left pedal = counter-clockwise.
  12. Install the front wheel and tighten it with a wrench or Allen key. Tightening is tight.
  13. Inflate the tires to the correct pressure.
  14. Straighten your handlebars .
  15. Secure your voice . Tighten the bolts in small increments (approximately 1/5 turn at a time) until snug.
  16. Set the brake levers to the correct position (see video).
  17. Common mistake: placing levers too far down, making them difficult to reach.
  18. Adjust the brake levers perfectly: stand with your feet on the ground and the bike between your legs. Place your hands on the handlebars and extend your fingers. The lever should fall below your fingers. Lock it there—this is the ideal position.

And you're ready to ride!

Mounting BMX pegs – step by step

Want to expand your tricks and take your BMX to the next level with pegs? This video and tutorial will teach you step-by-step how to install pegs and what to look out for with axles and adapters.

  1. You'll need: a socket wrench that fits your rear axle, and an extension so you can work through the peg.
    • 10mm (3/8”): Usually used for the front axle, fits most front wheels and pegs.
    • 14 mm: Almost always used for the rear axle, stronger and designed for grinds and impacts. Pegs are often 14 mm with an adapter for 10 mm axles.
  2. If you have a ratchet with an extension for the socket wrench, assemble it so that you can work with ease.
  3. Check the axle diameter to know if you need an adapter.
  4. Loosen the axle nut by turning it counterclockwise.
  5. Place the peg over the threads.
  6. Tighten the nut clockwise. Start the first three or four turns by hand to avoid damaging the threads. If it turns smoothly, you're good to go.

Repeat this process for the front axle in the same manner.

Tip: When riding with pegs, be aware that your bike will become wider. Rear pegs can cause you to lose your balance when mounting or dismounting if you unexpectedly bump into the peg.
