Board maintenance basics

Skateboard maintenance: check, adjust & replace

Wondering if your skateboard needs maintenance? A few simple checks will tell you right away if it's necessary. This way, your board will last longer and you'll stay safe while skating.

Do I need to maintain my skateboard?

A skateboard will last much longer if you check it occasionally. Maintenance isn't always necessary, but it is smart to prevent problems. Ask yourself these questions:

Can you answer 'yes' to any of these questions?
Then it's time for a quick maintenance check. Below you'll find solutions for each component, with clear explanations and videos.

Let the wheels run freely

Check your skateboard wheels regularly to make sure they turn smoothly and don't lock up. Tight nuts or dirt can make your board roll less smoothly.

Step by step how to free wheels

  1. Lift the board and give each wheel a spin to feel the freewheel.
  2. Listen and feel : Chafing or stopping early = too tight; sideways play = too loose.
  3. Adjust the axle nut : a quarter turn at a time looser when sanding, tightener when there is play.
  4. Check crosswise for uneven wear or flat spots and replace if necessary.

Cleaning or replacing bearings

Is your skateboard no longer rolling smoothly? Chances are your skateboard bearings need attention. You can clean dirty bearings, but if they're worn out, it's best to replace them immediately. New bearings provide more speed, control, and less noise.

Step-by-step bearing replacement

  1. Materials required – Hammer, 13mm wrench, punch, 2 new bearings , spacer and 2 equal height planks.
  2. Unscrew the nut from the wheel and remove the speed ring and wheel from the axle.
  3. Remove the first bearing using a hammer and punch.
  4. Tap the edge of the bearing on the inside at an angle until it loosens.
  5. Install new bearings – press them in straight, not crooked.
  6. Press the bearing surface with your fingers.
  7. Turn the wheel over and install the spacer. Make sure the bushing is flush with the bearing hole.
  8. Place bearing 2 horizontally and press gently.
  9. Place the speed ring back onto the axle.
  10. Replace the wheel (logo facing out).
  11. Place the second speed ring and tighten the nut again.
  12. Please note: the lock (white plastic ring) must come out so that the nut does not come loose.

Speedrings & axle nuts

The small rings between the bearings and the nut are called speed rings. They reduce friction and ensure your wheels last longer. When replacing bearings, check that your speed rings are still present and use sturdy axle nuts to secure everything properly.

Checking speed rings step by step

  1. Remove one wheel and note the order: speedring – bearing – wheel – bearing – speedring.
  2. Check for wear : replace bent, missing or worn speedrings.
  3. Install in the correct order and adjust the axle nut so that the wheel rotates freely (does not bind, no play).

Replacing bushings

The bushings in your trucks determine how smoothly your board steers. Softer for turns and carving, harder for tricks and stability.

How to replace bushings step by step

  1. Choose the right bushings to suit your driving style.
  2. Loosen the kingpin nut (counterclockwise) until it is completely free from the threads.
  3. Take the truck apart and lay out the parts in order.
  4. Prepare everything : have the new bushings ready.
  5. Place the bottom washer over the kingpin.
  6. Place the lower bushing over the kingpin.
  7. Place the hanger back on the kingpin.
  8. Place the top bushing (tapered) with the wide side down.
  9. Place the top washer over the kingpin.
  10. Replace the kingpin nut ; secure the washer at the top to prevent it from vibrating loose.
  11. Turn the nut by hand first to prevent it from running crookedly.
  12. Further tighten with a skate tool and adjust tightness to preference.

Adjusting trucks

Well-tuned skateboard trucks balance stability and maneuverability. Tighter turning gives you more control during tricks, while looser turns result in smoother turns.

Step-by-step truck tuning

  1. Start Neutral : Set your trucks to a standard, tight setup as a starting point.
  2. ¼ turn method : Turn the kingpin nut a maximum of a quarter turn each time and test in between.
  3. Speed control : tighter = more stability; looser = smoother turns.
  4. Test your balance : lean left/right in your natural position and feel whether the trucks cooperate.
  5. Adjust to your style : tricks → a little tighter; cruising/carving → a little looser.

Tightening trucks

Do you notice any play between the truck and the deck? Then your trucks need to be re-tightened. Use a Phillips screwdriver and a 13 mm wrench.

How to tighten skateboard trucks

  1. Check for clearance : move the trucks slightly. If there's any clearance between the truck and the deck, they need to be tightened.
  2. Materials required : Phillips screwdriver and 13mm wrench.
  3. Tighten the bolts : Hold the screwdriver on top and tighten the nut under the deck until there is no more play.

Check deck

The skateboard deck is the foundation of your setup. Check it regularly for cracks, delamination, or reduced pop. Replacing a worn deck is often the safest option.

Step-by-step deck check

  1. Visual inspection : look for cracks, chips and delamination (loose layers).
  2. Feel for soft spots and listen for cracking sounds when pressed.
  3. Check the mounting holes for cracking or ovality.
  4. Unsure? Choose replacement to prevent breakage.

Repair grip tape

Is your grip tape peeling off the sides but otherwise still clean? You can press it back into place with heat.

How to fix loose grip tape

  1. Heat the grip tape with a paint stripper or hairdryer. Gently pull the loose edge taut as the tape softens.
  2. Push the grip tape back onto the deck and press firmly until it is tight again.

Removing grip tape

Is your grip tape really worn or damaged? Then it's time to remove it completely and replace it.

How to remove old grip tape

  1. Gently heat the grip tape until the adhesive releases.
  2. Peel off piece by piece with patience until the deck is clean.
  3. Remove adhesive residue if necessary to ensure a clean surface.

Sticking grip tape

With new grip tape, your skateboard will feel like new again. You'll have more grip and control during tricks and cruising.

Video: How to apply grip tape

How to apply grip tape step by step

  1. What you'll need : deck, new grip tape, degreaser, cloth, small screwdriver, and a sharp knife.
  2. Clean the deck with a cloth and degreaser.
  3. Position the grip tape neatly in the middle with ±1 cm overlap.
  4. Press from the center and work outward to avoid air bubbles.
  5. Accentuate the edges with the screwdriver for a clear cutting line.
  6. Cut out the edges with long, steady strokes.
  7. Punch the truck holes for easy mounting later.

Storage & Weather

Always store your skateboard in a dry place out of direct sunlight. Moisture damages bearings and the deck, and heat can weaken your grip tape and glue.

Safety

Maintenance is important, but don't forget your own protection. Always wear a helmet and safety gear when performing tricks and high speeds. Check out our protective products .
