Roller skating problems?

Oops, your roller skates aren't working properly: here's how to fix it

Are your skates creaking? Are your wheels rolling stiffly or is the steering unsteady? Don't worry – these are often small things you can quickly fix yourself. Click below for your problem and follow the steps.

Are your wheels not running smoothly / are your roller skates rolling with difficulty?

Video: Freewheeling wheels

This is how you fix it

  1. Lift your skate and give each wheel a spin.
  2. Do you hear scraping or does the wheel stop quickly? Then the nut is probably too tight. Loosen it a little at a time and test again.
  3. Do you feel any sideways play (the wheel wobbles)? Then the nut is too loose. Tighten it a little and test again.
  4. Check for dirt : sand/hair can get stuck between the bearing and the wheel. Clean it or remove the wheel to check.

Adjusting trucks (steering too soft or too tight)

Well-tuned trucks offer a balance between stability and maneuverability. Too loose = wobbly; too tight = heavy steering.

This is how you fix it

  1. Start neutral : test briefly by leaning gently left/right.
  2. Adjust in small increments and test in between. It's best to adjust both trucks simultaneously.
  3. Too wobbly? Tighten it a bit for more stability.
  4. Too stiff? Loosen it a bit for smoother steering.

Brake pad (toe stop) is loose / crooked / wears out quickly

Your toe stops are your brake and your control during many maneuvers. If they're loose or crooked, braking feels unreliable.

This is how you fix it

  1. Check that the toe stop is securely fastened and cannot turn while driving.
  2. Check the height : too low = you'll hit it easily; too high = you'll have to search too much for contact.
  3. Do you see a lot of wear? Replace it in time; worn rubber reduces grip.
  4. Tip: Check both skates. Uneven adjustments can quickly feel "crooked."

Cracking or rattling noise while driving

Noise is usually a sign of looseness, dirt, or a part that is not quite right.

This is how you fix it

  1. Check the wheels : remove one wheel and check for dirt, hair or sand near the bearing.
  2. Check the axle nut : too loose it can rattle, too tight it can rub.
  3. Check trucks and hardware : check bolts and nuts for tightness.
  4. Does the noise persist? It's likely a worn bearing: replacing it is the fastest way to do that.

Pain or pressure points: roller skate is not comfortable

A skate that doesn't fit properly makes everything more difficult. Fortunately, it's often a matter of adjustment rather than "bad luck."

This is how you fix it

  1. Lace smarter : don't pull evenly. Tighter at the instep, a little more relaxed at pressure points.
  2. Heel lock : make sure your heel is securely locked; this prevents slipping and blisters.
  3. Socks : a good (skate) sock can reduce friction and pressure.
  4. Readjust after 10 minutes : your foot often “sets” a little during the first ride.
  5. If it continues to hurt, the boot might not fit your foot shape. In that case, it's wise to seek advice.
