Your Stunt Scooter Not Working Like It Should? Find the Solution Here
Oops, my scooter is acting weird…
Is your scooter creaking? Are your handlebars wobbling? Are you suddenly hearing strange noises while riding? There's a good chance something is loose. Don't panic – we'll help you step by step.
Start with the drop test
Lift your stunt scooter by the handlebars and let it bounce from about 15 cm to the ground.
- Dull sound? Everything is secure.
- Sharp or rattling noise? Something is loose or needs replacing.
Step 1: Check your headset and handlebar clamp
A wobbly handlebar or a creaking noise when turning often indicates a problem with the headset or handlebar clamp.
Check headset
Place one foot on the deck and push the handlebars back and forth. Feel any play? Then the bolt on top of the headset needs to be tightened.
Note: There are two systems. Check which one you have and watch the appropriate video:
Threaded headset:
HIC or IHC system:
Tighten handlebar clamp
Because of the thick wall of the handlebar clamp, it often seems tight, even though it isn't. Here's the trick:
- Tighten the top bolt 1/8 turn.
- Then the bottom one.
- Repeat this alternately until the clamp is securely fastened.
Step 2: Check your wheels
Is your wheel moving sideways? Then the axle is probably not secured properly. Tighten the bolts until the wheel is stable.
Replacing bearings
Are you noticing your wheel is locking up or rolling less smoothly? Then your bearings need replacing. With a little skill, you can do it yourself:
Step 3: Grip tape loose or worn?
Is your grip tape coming loose ? This often happens due to moisture, dirt, or heavy use. Don't worry – you can fix it yourself.
Dry and clean first
Let your deck dry thoroughly and clean it. If the tape really isn't sticking anymore, it's time to replace it.
Can it still be saved?
If only a corner is loose, but the rest is still secure, try this:
- Get a hair dryer or paint stripper (around 80–90°C – be careful, it's hot!).
- Carefully heat the loosened piece of tape.
- Then press it firmly back into place and let it cool.
Step 4: Grips sliding off the handlebars?
Spray some hairspray or grip glue under the handles and let it dry completely. This will keep them securely in place and prevent them from sliding around.
Use good tools (really!)
WARNING! Incorrect tools can damage your scooter and strip your bolts. This video shows the difference between a worn Allen wrench that can cause damage and one that's perfectly functional:
Tip: Always use a long, sturdy Allen wrench that fits the bolt properly. This allows for more precision and prevents frustration (and damage).
Bonus tip: your Allen key matters
Does your handlebar clamp keep coming loose no matter how tight you tighten it? Then it's probably not you, but your tools.
In this video you'll see why the length of your Allen key really makes a difference:
- Key 1 & 2: too short → little power, frustration guaranteed.
- Key 3 & 4: longer → more leverage, tighter results.
The trick: tighten it a little (1/8) at a time (1/8). Force x length = a handlebar that actually stays in place.
