How to Keep Your Unicycle Smooth, Stable, and Safe to Use

How to keep your unicycle running smoothly and safely

A squeaky wheel, a wobbly saddle, or a flat tire? No worries. With a few quick checks, your unicycle will stay in top shape—and you'll stay stable on that one wheel.

Do I need to maintain my unicycle?

With regular maintenance, your unicycle will roll more smoothly, your steering and balance will be more precise, and your components will last longer. Ask yourself these questions:

Tire pressure for my unicycle – too hard, too soft, or just right

How hard should you actually inflate your unicycle tire? Too soft, and you'll buckle. Too hard, and every bump feels like a thud. In this video, we explain how to find the right pressure—without a pressure gauge.

When in doubt, use a pump with a pressure gauge (and a valve). Or even easier: feel, test, and listen to your unicycle.

Tip: Use a bicycle pump with a car valve – they fit almost all unicycle tires.

Adjust your saddle – wobble or spin solved

Does your saddle twist while riding? Chances are your saddle clamp is too loose. In this video, we show you how to easily fix it yourself. A properly adjusted saddle clamp prevents wobbling, twisting, and discomfort while riding.

  1. Not too tight: if you tighten the clamp too much, it won't close properly. It might appear secure, but it will actually come loose when riding.
  2. Find the right tension: Gradually tighten the clamp's dial until you reach the point where you can firmly close the clamp. It should close tightly and be completely flush with the frame.

With this simple adjustment you will continue riding stably and comfortably.
Note: "Fixed is fixed." Turn with feeling and don't overdo it.

Bearings clean and smooth

Is your wheel creaking or not running smoothly? Give your bearings a quick service.

  • Wipe away dirt with a soft cloth or brush.
  • Apply a drop of High Speed Bearing Oil . Not too much—just a drop is enough.
  • Avoid pressure washers; they wash the grease out of your bearings.

My pedal is coming loose from my unicycle – with world champion Roos Seegers

Is your pedal coming loose while you're riding? There's nothing more frustrating than a pedal that comes loose just as you're enjoying yourself. In this video, Roos Seegers , world unicycling champion, explains why this happens and what you can do about it.

Main causes and solutions:

  • Crank bolts and pedals not tightened properly? Check everything for play and tighten them firmly.
  • Left-hand components on the left side: Assemble everything according to the left/right markings. This prevents the pedals from loosening on their own.
  • Incorrectly installed = wear and risk of damage: installing it correctly once makes all the difference.

Small check, big difference

  • Pedals firmly in place?
  • Saddle clamp and saddle bolt tightened properly?
  • Axle and frame bolts checked for hand-tightness? ( tight = tight , do not force)

This way you avoid surprises while driving.
